Turn The Heat Up With South African Street Food – Bunnychow

I’ve always thought of South Africa having an exotic appeal. Whenever people speak of it I think of the animated Wild Thornberrys series I used to watch, eyes glued to the telly and dreams of becoming a monkey (also assuming it was set in Africa). Having been to the West on several occasions the South has always felt out of reach.

It’s important to make use of the cities we live in and London should definitely be taken advantage of. It offers culture in many ways, not what encompasses a Londoner but the exotic, the demure and the extravagance that has lined our streets- bespoke food restaurants, boutiques and eateries.

Durban is a South African beach city, something that is heaven to my beach-loving, city-living self. The only problem is that it’s currently not in London and that’s where I am. The only place that gets me close to this travel dream is Bunnychow in Soho. I can’t compare their ‘bunnys’ to those made in Durban, but I can attest to just how much my appetite for Durban food was relieved when I discovered this gem among the cobbles and scaffolding in Soho- not literally.

Bunnychow 1 (640x429)

I’ve been here before, their brioche bunny is too good for me to stay away. This January Bunnychow changed their menu to be healthier- a sort of retaliation against all those who believe cutting bread out of their diets will help (it won’t- you’ll miss out on the best creations). To help with this detox Jan and going forth, the menu now has nutritional updates that are even more appealing. They’ve introduced different breads and mixed up their usual curries to go inside these hollowed breads. I tried the Charcoal Brioche Loaf with Chakalaka Chicken- the level of heat is not for the faint hearted. The charcoal helps the body absorb harmful toxins, cleanse the digestive system and boost the immune system.

Bunnychow 2 (640x427)

I took a special like to their Rabbit Punch drink, which is a blend of gin, cucumber, mint and elderflower with dashings of lime and lemon juice. It’s got a citrus kick but mellowed by the cucumber. Definitely refreshing and perfect to calm you down after a spicey Chakalaka Chicken or Pulled Pork filling. My favourite part was the delicious chocolate pudding centred in the sweet brioche and sprinkled with bread and walnuts. I recommend you share this dessert as it’s quite filling, but worth the gooey spoonfuls.

Bunnychow 3 (640x427)

The atmosphere at Bunnychow is always so relaxing and chilled, it makes you wonder if everyone in Durban is just as relaxed. You will be able to find Bunnychow at 74 Wardour Street right in the middle of bustling Soho. It’s definitely got one of the best spots in the west and makes for a perfect place to stop by after work for a quick drink and easy conversations.

Other new introductions to Bunnychow are the Mathcha Green Tea White Loaf, Gluten Free Loaf, Protein Wholemeal Loaf and Naked Bunny Loaf- all a part of their new Better Breads menu. Tbe perfect way to continue the year with your healthier lifestyle intact.
