You’d be stupid not to visit Stupe

You heard it here first – Stupe, the mini Croatian island which is a quick 10 minutes from Korcula by water taxi, is a must-see this summer (and every summer henceforth). The islet of Stupe is set in a clear blue lagoon with views of other islets a short swim away.

Easily while away a Croatian island day when you’re staying in Korcula, another of Croatia’s incredible islands – it’s not where the tourists flock to but it has a slower pace of life in the summer months compared to others like Hvar. From Korcula, there are plenty of water taxis you can catch to Vela Stupa if you want a short break from the island (to another island…).

Water Taxi to Stupe

Anchor away and call me your skipper – I steered us to Stupe on a small speedboat water taxi. The second we jumped on I asked if I could & without any hesitation, the actual skipper trusted me, or at least he trusted himself enough to do some damage control. It must be the innocent face, nobody would look at me & think daredevil (little do they know). Considering the water taxi was around €20, I found the value for money by being out in the open, plus being given advice on how to time passing boats… so that we don’t crash.

We arrived at Stupe impossibly fast & not without mishap. Hot tip: A flowing dress on a fast water taxi could lead to flashing unsuspecting yachters. After the initial thrill of manoeuvring us across the ocean, Stupe was a steady paradise. A small island islet made up of the Moro bar & restaurant, I’d heard it was also a dancer’s dream when first opened in June 2017. For our trip, a week ahead of high season, it was a quiet sanctuary. Music flowed easily from the DJ deck & a handful of beach goers were around, including visitors from an idling yacht.

Food and drink in Stupe – there’s a full menu but this was my fave

The food and drink from Moro is now one of my favourite meals – on par with many of my experiences eating in Croatia. We’re talking fresh catches from the sea & even a dish as simple as potatoes & chard was elevated with the simplest ingredients (most likely due to the sea water… but the kitchen didn’t reveal their secret trick when asked).

I gorged on fresh seabass with crisped skin, sea bream and a side of chard with buttery salted potatoes. Already fuelled for the day with Gin Mare & tonic mixes from the bar hut, I couldn’t fault their offering. Spending a whole day here? I recommend opening a bar tab to combine your food and drink orders – it makes ordering even faster.

Things to do other than catching sun rays

An easy day can be spent here swimming, swinging on their beautiful, albeit slippery, set of ocean swings. It’s great for the gram.

In June the hire for sun loungers was around €20 but you can also lounge directly on the big pebble dashed beach. Bring along your snorkelling gear as the water is so clear, you’ll want to plunge right in & check out the sea floor.
