Sitting by the water’s edge while the sun sets quietly, with a whisper. It’s in its element, going down slower by the minute. The guitar was being strummed behind us and the only overlapping sound was that of the water greeting the shore at Rex Smeal Park.
Rex Smeal Park is in Port Douglas and was one of my favourite places in Queensland. I think it may have been the exact moment, sun setting, music playing and looking out over the water’s edge that really made it a definitive place. I can still remember the tranquil calmness I felt in that moment. As if everything was okay and at right in my world. It’s truly one of the places that stand out in my memory. Becky and I talked a little, sat a lot and looked out at the boat going past, the little birds chirping and flying about, and the slow lapping of the water against the rocks.
When I think of a park this isn’t what I think of but I’m glad it exists and that the locals can enjoy a rare slice of peace in this beautiful haven.
