Pellegrini’s Espresso Bar will transport you back in time to red vinyl stools, checkerboard floors and rustic Italian displays. Expect an assortment of cakes on show, grab a napkin to wipe away the drool. Find it at the cusp of Chinatown, down Bourke Street, away from the savvy shoppers.
Distinct in how discreet it can seem, from the outside Pellegini’s can be any old hang. But no place has the same atmosphere as that exhibited in this Italian restaurant. You’ll be greeted by young and older white-shirt waiters, either exceptionally present or breezing by in their own world. I recommend to head inside with an open mind and taste buds as unless you know Italian, you may not know exactly what’s on your plate.
That’s the fun of it for me. I enjoy choosing a dish, asking what’s in it, not completely understanding the answer and still going for it. The available dishes are displayed on an age-old wooden sign hanging above the bar. It’s all in Italian. Including the answers when you ask the waiters.
I find something quintessentially beautiful about a place like this. You get what you’re given. Deal with it. The first time I went I was allowed a taster of two pasta dishes which was quite filling. If you’re slightly charming, you can even get yourself a generous slice of cake…
Basically, pick your pasta and the sauce and if you want meat or not. Otherwise there’s also the choice of risotto or lasagne. Their coffee is divine and there’s no way you can go without tasting all three coffee, cake and main meal.
Buon Appetito!
